The Chair of Art and Design Studies
The Professorship of Art and Design Studies is part of the Department of Design at the Folkwang University of the Arts. The art and design course provides a foundation in considerations of design history and design theory, without which the profession of the designer cannot be sustainably established.
Art and design studies enable students to recognize the designed environment in a reflective manner. This is made possible by teaching the history of design and by examining current design. The connections between design decisions and the major cultural, political and sociological developments and themes are made clear. The observation and interpretation of everyday aesthetic phenomena is constantly considered in the courses. The history of visual culture in its complex interweaving with industrial design, photography, communication design, art and other expressions of aesthetic dimensions is also part of art and design studies.
The range of courses on offer enables students to engage academically with topics such as "Aesthetic Experience and Experience", "Time and Space in the Design of Objects", phenomenological theories or the "History of Interaction". Art and visual studies form an integral part of the course.
